In formula 1 is there a connection between the drivers car number and their standing the previous year? I was wondering if the drivers car number is drawn at random or if there is a connection between the results of the previous season (driver or constructor) which gives them their car number.

  1. Well, their results in the previous season gives them their car number.
  2. #1 is given to the driver who won the Drivers championship of the previous year and his teamate gets #2. But #3-#22 (this year has 11 teams with 2 cars) is based upon consructors points. This season Alonso wears #1 and his teammate is #2. Even though McLaren finished third in the constructors battle. Renaults are 3 and 4. Ferrari is 5 and 6. And so on for the other teams.
  3. I hate to be redundant, so let's just say "Carve The Canyon" is spot on! Regards...
  4. Yes there is. But it is based on the standings in constructor. However, the World Champion will take the no.1 to his new team if he decides to leave the team he won title with. this was proven by Alonso. Althought renault won the constructors and the driver's championship with him, they didn't get the no.1 car as alonso moved to McLaren. Therefore, McLaren had cars No.1 and 2 while Renault got 3 and 4.
  5. Purplecat is correct. the no.1 constuctor of the previous year has numbers 1 and 2. If the world champion driver changes to another teams its gets numbers 1 and 2.
