Is a fuel injection service necessary?

I took my 2004 Honda Pilot (20,000 miles) in for a check up today because it seems to have lost some of the fuel efficiency. They checked it out, and recommended a "fuel injection service" to clean the fuel injectors. Would a car with so few miles really need this service already? Also, isn't this something that could be taken care of with a gasoline additive?

  1. There are some good additives out there. Keeping the injectors clean is good for gas mileage AND the pocket book.
  2. Its a good idea
  3. The gas additive and the injection service are going to do the same thing essentially, but the service that the shop is going to perform is, most likely, whats called a three-part fuel treatment and it does a much better job then a stand alone fuel additive. You should also be using premium with that year vehicle, it will help to keep those injectors from getting "gummed" up, and help keep your gas mileage up. Good luck.
  4. Not if they think it's that bad, injector cleaner in 3/4 tank of fuel twice should stop this from happening again. Replace fuel filter also. Bad fuel may have caused this!
