what is fuel injection and what are its benefits?

i keep hearing about fuel injection and im wondering what it is and why its better or what its used for?

  1. ALL modern cars are fuel injected. You have to go to cars early 90's to get non-fuel injected (carburetor cars). Basically fuel injector sprays fuel into the engine (piston) so it can burn it and get energy to move the car. It is BETTER by far, because the computer can accurately control how much fuel to inject. On old carb car, it was an approximate (and often rich - excessive fuel for safety). Good Luck..
  2. It just means that the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders instead of through a carborator. You dont have to worry about jetting and the throttle response is better. If you are going to get a street bike, go with fuel injection.
  3. fuel injection is when each cylinder has its own pressurized injector. As apposed to carburated, where the fuel is misted in the carberator and flows down the intake to each intake cylinder. There are advantages to both. The advantages for fuel injection...better fuel mileage, more consistent, and more efficient.
  4. Well, the answers are partly right. Fuel injection is the up- to- date way of supplying the fuel to an engine. It is, these days, generally managed by an "engine management system ", and the advantage is closer control over mixture and placement of the cylinder charge. Most injector systems in use today "inject" the fuel at the inlet valve when it is doing its opening thing. The other method is "direct" injection, where the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. Either way, the job of supplying the fuel is done far better than carburettors can do. And without the necessary "choking" of the incoming air by the carby venturi. So more air, more fuel, better mixture.
  5. I have a different take on fuel injection, I built a Chop to get away from map sensors, O2 sensors, fuel pumps (gravity has done me fine for 37 years) don't want to plug in a computer to look for trouble codes, and sure don't want to be stuck in crotchrot arkansas waiting for a fuel pump that cost just under 400 bucks + labor, I carry a little tool bag and can pull my carb down in a few minutes, if I get too high in the mountains I carry 4 jets that on a hsr mikuni carb can be changed without carb removal it's right in the bowel drain, and God help you if you get some bad gas with your fuel injection, you can't just drain it out and open the bowel drain, and be on your way, most of the time simple is better.
  6. Besides all the answers above, if you are not a mechanic or a master tuner...fuel injection will in 'essence' provide you better fuel economy and less maintenance troubles including tune-ups. Ideally your air/fuel mixture is precisely controlled providing you better efficiency and better wear on engine parts, and a cleaner engine with less pollution to the atmosphere. You know what Rottweilers and Harley's have in common? They both like riding in the back of a pick up...
  7. With fuel injection you don't have to fiddle with using a choke to get it started, but other than that, the main advantage fuel injection has over carburation is emissions control. That's the REAL reason auto manufacturers went to fuel injection. Better driveability is just a side benefit. As far as fuel economy goes, under the same conditions, there will be no difference in economy between a properly adjusted carb and FI. It's when you get into varying altitudes, temperatures and driving habits that FI delivers better economy. No matter what method you use to mix the air and fuel, it needs to be in the 14:1 range to run properly. One advantage FI has is that the manufacturer can have a crappy designed intake manifold (such as those with the super long intake runners) that if used with a carb, would let fuel drop out of the air flow, puddle and cause poor drivabililty and increased emissions. Injecting fuel at the intake valve eliminates the fuel related part of that problem.
