2001saturn Sc1 electronic fuel injection demands I depress the gas pedal while turning key. Fuel pump problem?

It usually occurs either when it is raining or humid outside or say that I've started thecar and driven it to my destination in 10 minutes later then after leaving destination (15 minutes later) the cars will turn over without starting until I depress the gas pedal to othe floor. The thing is that this model has an electronic fuel injection system (as far as I know). What could it be?

  1. Most likely a problem with the coolant temperature sensor. As they age, the sensor tends to crack and become contaminated with coolant. The sensor then reads extremely low. The car thinks it's cold outside so it commands a richer mixture which floods the engine. Pushing the gas pedal to the floor puts the car in "clear flood mode" which turns the fuel injection off temporarily. Make sure to inspect the electrical connector to the sensor as well. It's possible the sensor bled coolant into the connector corroding the connector. If the connector is corroded, it needs to be replaced as well. Saturn sells a redesigned brass sensor that prevents this problem from re-occuring.
