How expensive is it to replace a diesel fuel injection pump?
My job requires me to travel about 100 miles every day, so I'm looking for an economy car. I found an 87 Ford Escort diesel that will crank over, but not start. The owner says he's 90% sure it's the fuel injection pump. Wondering how expensive a repair this is.

- depends on the brand of pump it is you can have them rebuilt if you are sure its the pump it could be the glow plugs to or the igniter box and the injectors could be bad as well
- The diesel injector pumps are rather costly, I have an 84 Suburban with 6.2 Diesel, and the injector pump for it is $790 alone. So, you may wanna make sure that its the injector pump before you replace it.
- As previously stated, could easily be the heater plugs or the wiring/timer for them.I had a problem with a diesel where the indicator light for glow plugs came on as it should, remained on for required time, but the plugs were not getting any current so car wouldn't start. I "bodged" it up using a direct wire from battery to an old motorbike solenoid and then to the glow plugs. I then took the small wire to energise the solenoid through a push button on dash and had no problems thereafter. The replacement part would have cost over £100 from dealer. The only way to check would be to test the circuit to plugs and the plugs themselves.
- You can find an used pump from 100 to 200 dollars. From my experience on diesels, especialy Escort Diesels. I would look at fuel filter, primer pump. They have a tendency to fail.Filter get plugged up or develop a air leak. I would temporary bypass filter an hook an electric fuel pump in line. It should start. It also could be a weak starter not cranking the engine over fast enough to start it. I would try bypasing filter first.
- if you want same good advise.........escorts...leave em alone no matter if gasoline or diesel........they're JUNK...if it was any good the owner wouldn't sell it
