What if China decides to cut off exports of consumer products to the west?
We are depenent on China now. Nearly everything we need , use, wear and enjoy is Chinese. Look around you. Even Mercedes and BMW manufacture cars in China and why not? Quality is good and prices low. Your TV, Computer, Ipod, cell phone, clothes etc..Chinese. What if they decide to cut us off? we'll be crippled and the most likely cause would US aggression. The Chinese and Russians are buddies now.. Theres a new space race...the US is trying to get there (for the first time) before the Chinese. If the Chinese pull the plug on America we'll be sent back to the stone age in no time.

- My knickers come from china. I will have to go commando. Its a bit extreme to suggest it will send you back to the stone age, America did manage before china and they could manage without. If china was to stop exporting their goods to America the Chinese would lose a lot of money. I don't think it will happen
- we will have to make everything ourselves again and maybe employ the nation.
- Thats something they cannot do .If they did their economy would collapse. This is what globalisation is all about
- The only reason Chinese goods are everywhere is because the US imports so much from them on a regular basis China cannot afford to pull the plug on the West. The Chinese economy has been growing at about 8-9% for a long time and much of this increasing demand has come from demand from the west. If anything, the US is trying to stop China exporting so much by enforcing tariffs, quotas and embargoes on Chinese goods to try and give American suppliers a chance. In reality, China will be a world superpower in no time at all and will not have to rely on heavy exporting with a population of 1.2 billion. There will come a time when another under developed country will take over the mantle from China as the world's local exporter.
- what do you mean 'go back to the stoneage' We are currently heading in that direction albeit with a few new widgets [made in China] After Boris and Lee sort out Scott then what? Lee v Boris. It has never been Chinese policy to capyure forign lands only maintain their own. Now Boris is a natural hunter and he probably sees some possibility of recapturing past glory....perhaps by the time the senario arrises both will be mortally afflicted by advanced consumerism....watch this space!
- we are finished. they are coming It is the sign of the time no joke deadly serious. they are coming they own it now. we are finished.
- Why would the western companies in China wish to do this????
- then people will buy cheap products from india. no big deal. anyway you should hope that all these struggling nations become really powerful, they need a stronger voice in global politics.
- It would hurt China tremedously - where do you think it gets all its money from. Probably hurt them a lot quicker than us - we couldn't buy much of the consumer things we buy, but it wouldn't affect food and energy.
- China has not historically been an aggressive power outside what it perceives is its natural area of power - which is pretty much what it is today, except perhaps for Taiwan. They are quite a traditional country, despite the "communist" label - I think that the government there is many respects modelling itself on Confucian ideas of good government. There could be a crunch point over oil supplies as it may get in short supply, but we should all be trying to find alternatives now because of global warming. India and Russia or more natural rivals for China, but fortunately all of them seem pretty content with each other currently.
- if that did happen i think the US will start another war!!
- We would be hit by almost instananeous rampant inflation that would cause our economy to collapse. Do you know why our economy is so strong? It's nothing to do with Gordon Brown. The huge profits gained from companies sourcing their goods from China (& to a lesser degree, India), coupled with the rise of low-paid Eastern European immigrants is making our economy look buoyant. As soon as China decides to exert its huge political influence (and believe me, they're just waiting for the right time) the effect on us, and the West, will be a huge recession. Maybe even a depression to rival the 1930s.
- British economy would go to the dogs. We can't seem to be able to make stuff for ourselves.
- Then companies would have to open elsewhere and people in the U.K might have the chance of getting a job and a decent wage.
- Hardly dependant. Unless of course your'e still into crappy toys, duff housewares and dodgy electronics. Do you honestly see TV, the Ipod etc as "essential" to the continuation of western culture! More to the point would you buy a chinese car? Not a western car made in China but a genuine 100%, "The East is Red", chinese car! Panic in America? Or has a stone age mentality finally spread beyond the Bible Belt?
- That would not happen, have you heard the saying about sh***ing in your own nest?As regards the stone age?Stop being so dramatic!
- Who gives a toss ? China is run by unelected communists, who put down any threat to their rule. Granted.. they do seem non-aggresive on the world scene... but perhaps just biding their time. They are gonna want blue-water military capability soon to project that power... and I don't look forward to the day of seeing huge Chinese aircraft carriers and warships patrolling around in international oceans. Anyway.. Vietnam, South Korea ect will happily take up the slack from China should they decide to not supply the West. Also China's got a $Trillion odd invested in the US.... its not likely to want to start acting all mental again for some crazy cultural revolution... they've got the taste of good living now... luxuries... hard to go back to all that craziness.
- Made in China, has been in the shops from my Granparents time and before. Money is Money.
